Kingpin International is a leading Executive Search & Selection firm that specialises in Tax recruitment all across the world. This Global coverage, in addition to working alongside some of the world’s biggest companies gives us a unique insight into the International Tax marketplace and what a fascinating and challenging time it is to join this profession.

We sat down for a short chat with one of our Co-founders, Alister O’Connor, who has been in the Recruitment industry for over 20 years to answer some of our questions:

Why International Tax Recruitment?

‘Tax is constantly evolving in these ever-changing economic and political times which allows for opportunities worldwide. Tax is very important for multinational corporations and is often viewed as part of a company’s strategy in its growth plans. Tax authorities are more aggressive. There are more Tax Compliance and Tax reporting obligations as well as transparency needed by Corporations which require a particular skill set and knowledge base’.

‘Tax is also continuously shaped by the present and the future; from tax reform to BEPS to tax technology, the trends are ongoing and provide lots of opportunities for anyone with a passion for taxation’

What Does It Take?

Why having additional languages might make you stand out?

‘If you are a Multinational corporation with key operations or revenue in numerous countries across the Globe, then as an In house Tax function that may present challenges from a language perspective, in particular when you are working or negotiating with the Tax Authorities or where there are some Complex Tax issues that need presenting locally. Therefore, having an additional language(s) may prove invaluable to that business’.

‘This can become even more challenging for a business if the local Tax talent is small or limited, resulting in job opportunities for expat applicants who are able to speak the language (s) of that region’.

‘Similarly, if you are working in one of the Big 4 Consulting firms (or others) who have an international client base, then additional languages will frequently be sought after or at the very least, seen as a big asset’

What skills & experience are needed in the marketplace?

‘This is obviously a very big question and will depend on if you are specialising in a particular Tax area or what your core technical (Tax)skills are. Looking at it generically, most of the large employers in International tax, for example, any of the Big Four, will expect you to have cross-border, International Tax experience as well good technical knowledge, strong commercial awareness and the ability to communicate complex tax issues in a very clear and concise way. If you are looking at In House international roles, then you can add to that some operational understanding’.

‘It’s a given that in such a competitive and international candidate led market that all of our Multinational and Advisory / Consulting clients expect a postgraduate degree or a professional certification. In particular a masters in Law (LLM), International Tax Law, Economics, Business Administration, Finance & Accountancy or ADIT (Advanced Diploma International Taxation).

‘From an Accountancy perspective then our clients would expect that you are CPA, ACCA or ACA qualified’.
